Holy Week, the most solemn part of the Church’s year is not far off. It would be very much appreciated if a few more people would be willing to generously give a little time (9-9.20) before Sunday Mass to rehearse new settings.

Please don’t leave it to the few volunteers we have.

The Music Group is there to lead congregational singing and all are strongly encouraged to participate in order to enhance our public worship.

We will, on most Sundays, have a cantor singing the verses of the psalm and the congregation is invited to sing the response.

There are now ten members in our Music Group, one of several ministries at St Clare’s.

A few more volunteers would be very welcome.

The Music Group’s aim is to introduce the parts of the Mass which the Church has always encouraged to be sung, e.g. the Gloria, Sanctus, Responsorial Psalm, Gospel Acclamation and other responses. The group also intends to introduce new hymns which, although not part of the Mass itself, are an admirable form of praise and serve to enhance the liturgy. As mentioned previously the congregation is strongly encouraged to participate in the sung parts of the Mass.

The Music Group practises for about twenty minutes before Mass, purposely finishing at 9.20am in order for quiet prayer before Mass to begin.

You may be aware that Bishop Terence is very keen to develop liturgical music within the diocese. Thanks to our recently formed Music Group, new settings for the Mass, eg. the Gloria and the Sanctus, are being introduced in which, hopefully, the congregation will actively participate.

The Music Group exists to lead the singing, not to perform these settings on their own. Please make every effort to join in. We normally have a 10 minute rehearsal after the Sunday 9.30am Mass. Please feel free to attend even if you are unable to commit yourself on a regular basis or have convinced yourself that you cannot sing.
St Augustine once said that he or she “who sings prays twice”
